Mothers and Other Monsters by Maureen McHugh

As a Christmas gift one of my dear friends bought me Maureen McHigh's Mothers and Other Monsters. I recently became a step-mom and I've been wondering what I am and who I am for as long as I have been one.

I've only read a few stories, and none of them had to do with a mother as a monster, though I expect one will creep up any second. Really, though, I wanted to post on this book because the writings is captivating, and the "science fiction" that the book falls under generally is not the sort I would have expected. It is a familiar sort of supernatural and other-worldly, and nothing I would have imagined. I love all sorts of fiction, but I read so many that sit too closely on reality's door. I'm done with looking at reality through its very drab eyes. This is alive and provocative.

I think this fiction is the kind I'd like to write.
